Dust flew when Alexander barreled into town with the speed of a small tornado. His rapid entry into Smithton shocked the small population of the township’s genteel society. Each one on the main road stepped back and stared at him with an expression of astonishment. Tied horses shied and drivers on the road fought to control their lead animals.
When he pulled up on his reins in front of the local gathering salon and swung his long legs down, he noted that his animal lathered from its mouth and glistened with sweat. He stroked Penumbra’s shoulder and tied the trembling horse to an unoccupied hitching post. Next, he straightened his black cloak about his shoulders and entered the community hall with all the self-confidence of a messenger on an important errand.
