MERRY CHRISTMAS!

This did NOT post itself when it was SUPPOSED TO! Here it is now!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

A chill saturated the room all night. Sarah shivered, but dared not rise and turn on the heat. To do so would mean she risk her life.

It waited in the wall. She heard it. When her husband arose to turn up the heat, he did not return. She could not move.

Go see what other Christmas suspense awaits you at http://www.suspenseful7ss.blogspot.com!

They Must Run!

The minute they left the building, the boy energized and tugged on the man’s hand in an effort to run. But Alexander refused to be rushed off. Instead he stood still and held Scotty in place. “What’s the hurry? Wait here a minute.” He had still not heard a word from the child. “Tell me, what is your reason to run?”

What Happened To The Children!

Valerie’s head lightened and she experienced a hazy dream-like sensation. She closed her eyes in an effort to steady herself and swallowed the discomfort of her moment of déjà vu away before she looked at her visitor again.

“May I help you, Sir?” she asked in tremulous query of his call at her home. Valerie watched as the unknown man at her door looked about himself, into her home, and again back to her face. He appeared as if he had no idea why he stood there. She glanced around him, but saw no children anywhere. What has he done to the children?

Her Foresight!

Valerie’s skirts caught on a fallen branch and she lost her footing, but soon regained her sense of balance. Her sudden near mishap brought her consciousness back to the present and returned her thoughts to those of a more immediate nature.

The possibility of the other settlers thinking of her as a witch frightened her. She considered that the colonists might think such a thing because of her ability to attain a healing connection with the children through their minds. Her foresight troubled her even before the perceived suspicion she had just glimpsed in Sarah.

The children have begun to act so strange. Many of them tore at their skin and made grotesque faces as if threatening those who stood around them.

the Talisman!

What could the talisman’s importance be?
Viktor had led her to believe that the end to his curse could be found here. Could that talisman bear any significance to our dilemma? Something deep inside urged her to discover the secret it held. The need to know what the scroll on the table told also consumed her. A shiver traced her heart. Curiosity killed the cat.

His Next Victim!

"A lovely young woman danced in your ballroom today. She wore the dress. She will be the next victim," the slurred remark came as more of a statement than a question.
"Yes," Viktor replied with a hesitant tone of misery.
"She is more beautiful than the rest," the other presence calmly remarked as he turned to noisily shuffle off. She was already damned. The young woman would need to be visited again, before it was too late.

News!

I am ahead of schedule on my NaNo novel! It is about a Vampire who is not under the traditional Vampire curse, his attraction for the curse’s intended female victim, and the turmoil that everything else which exists under the curse, creates for their HEA.
When I am finished with this month’s Nano my vampire is going back into his coffin for awhile and I’m going to return my creative attentions to a novella that I have recently finished and plan to be marketing very soon. My novella concerns a witch, a witch hunter, and magic in its various forms.

He Held Her Spellbound!

The persuasion that flowed from his eyes into hers held her spellbound. Sasha heard and responded to Viktor's voice, but he soon took her willpower from her. Much against her better judgment, she experienced an uncanny desire to submit to his every wish. Her natural intuition fought it, but her muscles thawed and she felt as if her vital force became his fluid for the taking.

The warmth of her blood flowed near the surface, her cheeks flushed, and an instant heated rush provoked her collapse onto the floor in a dead faint. Viktor was forced to participate as a grim grin curled His lips back.

He prepared to make her His...

Unearthly Solitude Possessed Her!

The unearthly solitude possessed her and made her at home.
Sasha froze in her tracks when she passed the music room. Her heart pounded erratically when she glanced inside. Its interior had darkened with the illusive shades of nighttime. I was just in that room! Her wide-eyed vision into the shadowed area now revealed the reverse side of a severe tall-backed chair she could not remember seeing before. An Interview With Serena Zane!

Taday I am interviewing Serena Zane, whose latest release is Moonlight In A ickkup Truck.

One more night… is it worth the risk to lose everything for a chance at love? Placing your heart on the line is hard to do, especially when there is doubt that the love is returned in the same way. Her best friend is leaving for the Navy and this is her last opportunity to reveal her true feelings, but will she have the courage?

Janette: In order that we can to get to know you, as a person, a little better, why don’t you tell me about who you are? Do you like to travel? Do you like to try new things? How about exotic foods?

Serena: I have always loved to travel. In fact, I used to be a member of an itinerant drama company called, Covenant Players, and visited 17 different countries in the space of three and a half years with them. Since then, I have settled down with my husband Gary and my son Cirdan in the Northwest. I love trying new things, one of my heroines flies small aircraft in Crystal Clear. Because I’d never had that experience, I had my friend Annie take my up in a Cessna and teach me how to fly. She let me do the whole gambit, take off, the flight, and the landing. It was very exciting. As to exotic foods, sure, why not. I am also heavily into study on crime, and love to research the late 16th century. My family and I are all active members of the Society of Creative Anachronism, Inc. which studies and recreates the Middle Ages.

Janette: What aspect of who you are drew you into writing romance?

Serena: It perhaps it was my overactive imagination. I’ve been reading romance novels since the sixth grade, but it was when I was going to college to study Criminal Justice that my imagination really took hold. I would spook myself over homework assignments that came with warning labels. So, one night I thought, dang, I should write this down. So, I did. That’s how it all started.

Janette: How many novels have you written, and of those, how many have you sold?

Serena: Well, I have sold one novel, Dark Hope, and one short story, Moonlight in a Pickup Truck that just released. I have written nine complete manuscripts, and am working on getting them submitted for publication.

Janette: As a full-time writer, how hard was it for you to get where you are today? Did it take long to reach that status? Were there a lot of rejections? Did they dishearten you? How long before that glorious call? What would be your advice to new writers?

Serena: As a full-time writer, I have to say that every day is a challenge. If it’s not promotions, it’s actually writing the manuscript, if it’s not writing, it’s getting out those queries. Writing is a challenging career overall, and unless you’re John Grisham or Nora Roberts, you may not make a lot, at least at first. I still hold down a full-time job as well. It had taken me ten years to get to this point. My first novel Dark Hope I tried for almost a year to get published after a year and a half of writing. One rejection after another came in and I got disheartened. I put it aside for almost four years. When I met my husband he encouraged me to try again, and lo and behold, an acceptance letter came! So, five years after deciding to write for a career I received my first contract with a publisher. My advice to new writers, just keep trying. There is nothing compared to the feeling of holding your completed manuscript in your hands as a paperback book with your name on the front. Do it for the joy of writing, not to make money. That will come with time and renown.

Janette: Is there a story or character you’ve written that is closer to your heart than the others? Why is it? Who is your favorite character or story someone else has created/written about?

Serena: Detective Nikki Adams, is my favorite character to write so far. She is a lot like me with insecurities and uncertainties, but she has gumption and doesn’t give up. Nikki embodies all the qualities I admire in a person, honor, integrity, a sense of humor, the ability to laugh at herself, a streak of stubbornness a mile long, and a don’t quit attitude. She also has a soft spot for strong men with dark hair and blue eyes, kind of like me.

As to who my favorite someone else has written…hmmm…there are so many. I think I would have to say Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin.

Janette: There are those of us writers who are known as “Pansters, Puzzlers, Plotters, and Patch-workers. (And there could be others out there, too.) LOL! What type of writer would you say you are?

Serena: Definitely a plotter.

Janette: Does your writing life allow you much time for a personal life?

Serena: My husband misses me during Na No month. And when I get really involved with a story my husband says I am in the room physically, but I am definitely somewhere else. I think he gets a little jealous sometimes.

Janette: Tell me about what you’re currently writing.

Serena: Currently I am working on writing my Na No novel Tiger Eye which is the last book in my Jewel Series. Meanwhile, I am also working on polishing three other MS for submission.

Janette: How long does the planning on a new story take you before you are ready to begin work on it?

Serena: About a week. I get the ideas rather rapidly, and have a system down for plotting.

Janette: What are your preferences in reading? Do you have any favorite authors that you admire?

Serena: Um…paranormal romance, and paranormal romance, and did I mention paranormal romance? My favorite author is Christine Feehan, but I also enjoy Teresa Medeiros, and Richelle Mead.

Janette: Where are your books sold, who are your publishers, and what are your contact URLs?

My books are sold at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, bookstogonow.com, and Outblast. My current publisher is Books To Go Now, and my url: http://www.serenazane.com, twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, and stumbleon.

Thank you for allowing me to blog with you!

All Is NOT As It Seems!

The wagon appeared to sit quiet. All about it remained still as she watched it near her with each step she took toward it. Its painted canvas fascinated her with the many attractive colors that adorned it.

“Hello?” she ventured as she got closer. No answer came to her. When she reached touching distance of the festive attraction before her, she reached out a hesitant fingertip to touch it. Her surroundings immediately sprang to life at her touch, and she jumped back into a pair of strong arms.

A certain strangeness!

He knew, the minute he had entered, that this was not a place that belonged to his friend. A certain strangeness enveloped him as the tent flapped closed behind him. Fear squeezed his heart. Adrenalin rushed up through his chest in much the same way as it had when he’d seen the monster in last year’s haunted house. But he had slipped into a trancelike state of consciousness before he could leave the mysterious place he had entered into.
“Scotty?” Val called into the distance. The last she had seen her little charge he had been skipping away from the school house.

They were coming. The angered crowd hoisted their pitchforks and shouted curses in the direction of her cottage. The vengeful sounds that erupted from their throats roared through the trees.

The Fear of Witchcraft!

The fear of witchcraft is delicately perched on the thin edge of superstition here in my new world hometown. But she persevered in spite of what people thought, knowing the children who lived here needed her special abilities within their thoughts in order to thrive in this new world.
Her innate sensitivities told her that the bored children who lived here needed her calming skills for their sanity. The people who lived here knew she loved their children and that she worked well with them.
With that in mind, they entrusted their troubled young ones to her care. Surely none of them would falsely accuse her of being a witch for her loving tendencies. But they have begun to visit and bring their children to see me, less often.

Will they soon be coming for her? Will they accuse her of witchcraft? Her suspense is palpable! Is yours? heh, heh, heh . . . Stay tuned!

“Well, come on! Let’s go!”
Alexander did not consciously know where he was about to take her, but he followed his subconscious. It did know.
They took his car and began to drive through the city streets. Alexander frowned and Valerie shivered as their surroundings became dirtier and more depressing with each block they took. Soon he stopped his car outside a very large, very old and decrepit building.

They All Shrieked!

His shoulders fell, his skinny arms dropped down to his sides, and he swallowed hard in search of what he should say next. He took a quick side glance at his playmates, as if for backup, and dove back into the eyes that scowled down on him. He drew a small arch in the dirt at his feet and quietly responded, “Just wondering.”

“I am,” Alexander stated. The boy didn’t need to know about his curiosity as to how they had known he was coming. “Now be gone with you,” he added with a sweep of his arm to point in the opposite direction.

The children all shrieked and ran off in the way that had been pointed out to them.

An E-Book Review!

I have just read Dragon Moon by Tori Minard. This was an Awesome read! The romance is HOT and her building of the Fairy world is so realistic. I could SEE it! I got totally lost in the story’s believability. It also contains a twist toward the end that came as an unexpected find!

I highly recommend this read for those who are into the genres of Romance and Fantasy World Building. Minard’s world building is Superb!

ACCK!! Yesterday’s 7 completely slipped my mind!! Here you go!

A murmur of consternation arose from the people of Smithton at his action of command. The majority slowed in fear and questioned whether or not they should continue to follow the witch hunter.
The original elder eventually stepped forward and led the way in Alexander’s intolerable path. At that instant the remainder of the council took heart and followed his lead. They wondered how the witch hunter knew which way he should go. He went exactly the way they would have shown him.
A hush fell over the crowd when Alexander reached the cottage where they had the children kept, and went forward without hesitation to examine them and their condition.

It was his mission to expose those who weren’t true. It was none of his business what they did to their own after such a revelation. Those who were true to the craft should be allowed to exist. Her deliberately straightened posture told him one thing.

Would she be falsely accused?!

Surely none of the folk of Smithton would falsely accuse her of being a witch. Her ability to share and recognize their feelings had earned her a place of high recognition within their healing community. The lone doctor there did not have the knowledge to work with those afflicted with mental or emotional problems. Up to the time she had arrived, such patients had simply been deemed as crazy and locked away with only menial care.
She loved the children she helped, but she was lonely. People tended to stay away from her because of her abnormal gift, and so she lived alone until her services were called upon.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Alexander, the well known witch-hunter, looked down on the small township of Smithton, Massachusetts from upon a rugged high slope adjacent to the village.

Today's Suspence Is Rushing Into the Unknown!

Hi!
Today's suspenseful 7 once more come to you from my wip! Enjoy!

As the boy rushed head long toward the new tent; he failed to notice the lack of activity around it. Other than a lone sagebrush that rolled across the tent’s width in front of its opening flap, none of his neighbors in the small town of Copper Run were there. But like a blind person, he continued toward it in anticipation and complete oblivion of that fact.

The air that had brought movement to the sage stilled as he approached the exhibition area. He looked, but found that still no one milled around it in search of entertainment, as they did the traveling man of magic’s other tent. The momentarily absent wind returned and whistled around the tent when he reached his destination. It curled through the boy’s hair like ghostly fingers.

Today's 7 Suspenceful Sentences!

Following from last Sunday's post, let's continue on with Valerie!

She paused outside the courthouse. The majestic building filled her vision as she ran a slow gaze from end to end of it before she entered. In silence she stood and listened. Valerie wasted no more time with thoughts about her purchases. She changed from her soiled slacks to the new ones, paid for all three purchases, and resumed her race for the courthouse. Deliberations about today’s case now filled her mind.

It should be simple, actually. She probably hadn’t needed to be so particular about the slacks she chose. The case was getting so close to its end. What she didn’t expect was what today would really be all about.

He shivered about today's 7 Suspenseful Sentences!

Hi! Today's 7 come from my wip! ENJOY!

He shivered the sensation away from him. No; this could not be done. The chance this woman would hurt him was too great. She had done it before and he could not face any more of it. His hand went to his chin, he broke their gaze and stammered, “I . . . I’m sorry. I took you for someone else.”

The knowledge she had hurt him before shuddered his heart.
How had he known that in such an excruciating degree as he had?

From here may I suggest you hop on over to http://www.suspenseful7ss.blogspot.com and be kept in further suspense!

A Suspenseful 7 Sentences For You!

Hi All!
Today's 7 sentences are from something new that my muse is working on. I shiver for Amanda and wonder what is in store for her!

The clock was ticking.

Amanda stared at its incessant second hand. It would not be long until she knew their decision. Fear squeezed her heart at the wonder of what it would be. She looked around herself at the four windowless walls and wished she could escape. She kneaded her sweaty palms. A key turned in the door’s lock.

more suspense from my Current Work!

This, too, is from my wip!

He remained where he sat in center stage. His cocky surety drew up the vision of one she had known, quite intimately, before. In some other time. In some other place. Her insides grew queasy with the unknown memory while her heart did back flips in eager anticipation.

Alexander knew her. He had to.

A VERY Suspenseul 7!

Hey All!
My Suspenseful 7 Sentence Sunday blog today has nothing to do with anything I’m writing. It’s about the end of the world that happened yesterday. How many of us were raptured? None; you say? That’s probably because none of us know the exact time or day of its occurrence. It will happen sometime; we just don’t know when. Isn’t that suspenseful enough?!

Since we haven’t seen the Second Advent yet, please be sure to check out what the rest of us Suspenseful 7 Sentencers have written, here http://www.suspenseful7ss.blogspot.com or at the link above!

Hi! Thanks for stopping by! Today's Suspenseful 7 come from the same wip that I have been posting from. Enjoy!

“She’s a witch!” The rag-tag group of cast out children stood their ground. Some even made a point of thumping down to a sitting position as they clamored.
“But she can help you!” Scotty retorted.
Heads shook. “She’s probably the reason we are sick!”

Here's the follow up I promised. Enjoy!

“Scotty?” Val called into the distance. The last she had seen her little charge he had skipped away from the school house in what struck her as a most adventurous way. Where had he been going? Of course. She knew that he enjoyed spending time at that charlatan’s tent. Then she turned her head toward the opposite end of Copper Run. Hadn’t he raised his tent down there?

Without further ado:

He knew, the minute he had entered, that this was not a tent that belonged to his friend. A certain strangeness enveloped him as the tent opening flapped closed behind him. Adrenalin rushed up through his chest. It urged him to take flight. The hair on the top of his head tingled, in much the same way as it had when he’d awakened from his latest bad dream and seen the white cloth over his bedroom window weaving in a night breeze like a ghost.

But instead of running out and away from the erected covering of canvas, his movements slowed. His thinking dulled and he slipped into a trancelike state of consciousness before he could listen to his instinct for self-preservation and leave the mysterious place he had entered into.

Stay tuned for more on this episode in next week's issue!!

My Newest Grandbaby!

I know this is not writing related, but I just could NOT resist!

My son just got married to a very Precious Lady who brought a new Favorite Grandbaby in the Whole World into my life! All my Grandbabies are my Favorites in the Whole World and now I have THREE!! Litttle Avalon is 2 and a 1/2 and she was a part of their April 16, 2011 wedding ceremony. She was a member of their wedding party and this picture is so dear to my heart because when the minister asked my son and his bride to join hands, my little Avi reached up to join hands with them. To me it signified her part in the beginning of their happy little family. I've attached a picture of that moment on my side bar.

It's a rainy day today here in Washington State, but we had our Easter Egg Hunt at my church yesterday when it was a Beautiful Day! The Easter Bunny WAS THERE, and I had the joy of having one of my favorite grandbabies in the Whole World there with me, too! (All of my grandbabies are and will be my favorites in the Whole World.)

It's Suspenseful Seven Sentence Sunday!

Valerie took a deep breath, threw her covers back, and bolted upright in the hope that she would see him there. But that did not happen.
At the realization of what she had just hoped to accomplish, she clasped her hands to the sides of her head.
She knew that she had to get rid of this craziness in her mind. Her heart trembled as she compared her experience to schizophrenia. In her mind’s eye she truly did see him as another person. His nightly visits did make her yearn to leave the mundane reality of her life and remain with him in his magical medieval world.

The king’s reaction came as predicted. “You shall not be punished, you are too important for the health of the Prince. But Alesander, he is expendable. There is another wizard who will be happy to resume his position in the castle court."
“But that other wizard is the one who I ‘saw’ during my connection with the Prince!”
“That can be remedied.”
“But that ‘other wizard’ cannot be allowed free access to Scotty! You can not send Alesander to his death!” she screamed.

7 Suspenseful Sentences!

After having missed last Sunday due to its slippage from my mind, I'm delivering seven sentences for you from my paranormal suspense work in progress.

"The feat The Master Magician is going to attempt tonight has never been tried, successfully, before. The loudspeaker voice paused for a chilling effect. The crowd hushed and the voice continued into their dreadful silence, “The torture box on the stage, which he will enter, is laced on its inside with steel spikes.”
Two well-poised young women dressed in golden flowing floor-length gowns, which glittered like the mineral itself, gracefully opened the body box and pointed out the piercing pins of silver spikes as the announcer spoke. The ominous spears appeared as numerous needles awaiting a pin cushion. The seemingly braver of the ladies touched the tip on one of the pins, jerked her blood-red fingertip back and gingerly placed it between her pouty lips. Her partner in the show stepped back and stared at the first in shock that she would do such a thing.

7 Suspenseful Sentences!

I hope I'm keeping you in suspense!!

She did not recognize his voice, but it sent shivers through her. Discomfort with the unknown upset her stomach. She wondered why he again didn't look like he liked her, or her name. Instead, he seemed to look at her with the same hatred and distrust of this morning’s chance meeting. His deathly quiet voice sounded that way too. She wondered if she really wanted to know why he had changed so, in the space of an instant, by the sound of her mere name. In spite of herself, she cocked her head and asked, "Is there something wrong with my name?

Today's 7 Suspenceful Sentences!

Hi All!
My suspenseful 7 sentences for today are from an as yet untitled work.
ENJOY!

As soon as I arrived, I sensed something wrong. Everything looked normal, but something just wasn’t right. I cracked the door open a pinch. “Hello?” I queried. Silence answered in its sinister absence. Gathering my courage, I pushed the door completely open, and screaming filled the air. It wasn’t until I needed to take a breath of air that I realized I had been the one screaming.

I Survived the Haunted Castle!!

Manresa Castle, located in picturesque Port Townsend, Washington is a treasure to behold. Upon entering the castle for my Olympia RWA chapter’s writer’s retreat, I found myself in another time. Everything in the castle (besides the contemporary necessities) is from the era of the castle’s original splendor.

I loved the castle’s antique atmosphere, but what I really wanted to experience were the ghosts that the castle is famous for! There are tales of the young woman who cast herself from a castle window, to her death, when she heard that her fiancé had been drowned at sea. Then there’s the tale of the Jesuit priest who hanged himself in a castle turret after he became disillusioned with his calling. And there’s the little girl who wanders the hall. Perhaps she is looking for a playmate?

On our first night there, we took a tour of each other’s rooms to see what they looked like because each of the bedrooms in Manresa is different. (Well, I guess that’s why the rest of us toured the rooms. Me? I was looking for a ghost!) In one two bed bedroom, two beautiful antique chairs sat facing the beds’ feet. I mentioned the ghosts who could be sitting there to watch the bed’s occupant during the night and I was told by Chassily, the room’s sole occupant due to circumstances beyond her control, that she did not want to talk to me any more! LOL! We even toured the tower where the priest is said to have hung himself!

That first night in our bedroom I was awakened by what I assumed was a ghost and I mentioned it to my boyfriend. He didn’t say anything and went back to sleep. The nerve! But I wasn’t frightened and lay there listening. First the ghost made clacking sounds outside the bedroom window. I got up to look out the window, but of course there was no one there. Then the ghost went out into the hall outside our bedroom and began to play out there! I assumed it was the little girl playing with things that made clacking sounds. And then I went back to sleep. When I shared my fun story with the rest of our chapter the next day, my boyfriend had the gall to tell everyone that the ghosts got quieter each time he turned the heater down! He NEVER turned the heater down! (To my knowledge.)

There was one friendly spirit who insinuated her presence there in front of us all. A small piece of paper with her name on it fell to the floor from one of our chapter president's paperwork to remind us of her. She was Elizabeth Kistler, a past chapter member who died of cancer last year. On that sign, we named our annual retreat after her.

The weekend went much quieter after my first night there and I learned a lot and got a lot of writing done. I received some excellent critique from Nicole on a contest entry that I was fighting a deadline on and I met the deadline with it!

They were there! I know it! But I didn’t see any ghosts.

This Week's Suspenseful 7 Sentences!

I'm going to have to incorporate Clay into a story. but enough of that! LOL!

This week's seven suspenseful sentences come from a future fantasy work in process of mine. it takes place in the distant future. ENJOY!!

The Year 3510 -

“How did I ever get myself into this mess?” Tracey wondered aloud. She wrapped her arms around the sheer fabric of the dressings she wore, and shivered in the cold holo-house “They” kept her in. They had left her alone so far, which was fine; she preferred it that way. She hoped they would continue to do so until she could find a way out. Water dripped somewhere, and Tracey wished, for the millionth time, that she could see.

Footsteps echoed in the darkness.

“I’m not who you think I am,” Tracy called out into the void.

It was CLAY!!

My bf and I attended a Wine Pairing Dinner last night. All went well until I asked said bf to check, with his cell that has all kinds of fun attachments on it, and see if any ghosts were present. It did detect one ghost who told us, via said cell, that his name was “Clay.” Needless to say, Clay decided that he would choose me to pick on all night.

At the beginning of the evening, while we enjoyed our scrumptious meal and the tasty wines delivered with each portion of it, Clay was well mannered and did not bother me. With three small glasses in front of me, I decided which wine was my favorite and set it aside to enjoy last. I sipped down the other two glasses and reached for the third, and that’s when Clay decided to step into my evening.

The glass I looked for, which had been sitting directly in front of me, was gone! (Not to say that I had already drank it and had forgotten, because everyone else at the table noticed too.) It was the neighbor sitting beside me who first noted that it had been Clay who had taken it. I promptly agreed that she was probably right and went back to my meal.

It was when I had finished my dinner that I noticed the empty glass that had been missing had returned to its place on the table and was empty! I pointed it out to everyone else, who enjoyed Clay’s prank.

I hope Clay enjoyed his glass of Sherry.

Today's 7 . . . Suspenceful . . . Sentences

My 7 Suspenseful Sentences today come from my first effort at placing pen to paper, so to speak. This scene takes place before my heroine meets her ghostly hero.
Excerpt:
Cassie took her time as she wandered through the old house. Its floors groaned in implied warning as she passed over them. The walls themselves spoke to her in muted whispers. A chill traversed her spine. She stopped in mid-step and cast her vision down the seemingly endless hall she stood in. Intermittent cobwebs spanned the ceiling’s length. Antique lighting fixtures dangled with forlorn effort from the dusty walls.

Suspenseful 7 Sentence Sunday Strikes Again!

Today's entry comes from my time-travel concerning the Modoc War. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!

Excerpt:

Kiuks did not sleep that night. The white soldiers were coming. It would have to be done quickly, and it had to be done discretely. An out-and-out killing would not work. A drowning, a bear mauling, a snake bite, an accidental poisoning drifted through his mind as visions of possible unexpected deaths filtered through his thoughts. He gazed around his place, and his eyes lit upon the multi-colored stones around his fire pit. And then he hit on it.

Anne K. Albert interview!

Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Anne K. Albert who writes riveting stories of mystery and suspense.

JANETTE: In order that we can to get to know you, as a person, a little better, why don’t you tell me about who you are? Do you like to travel? Do you like to try new things? How about exotic foods?
ANNE: I love to travel. I think I was about thirteen when I asked for my very own suitcase. It was a ridiculous idea, really. My parents were poor and could not afford to travel, but I remembered thinking how wonderful it would be just to pack a few of my things and pretend. Once I got a job, I spent most of my salary on travel. It’s still one of my priorities. It’s interesting that I rarely return to a place regardless of how much it impressed me. There is always somewhere else to go and see.
As for trying new things. Oh, yes. I get bored with the same old same old. It drives my husband crazy sometimes, but then I’ll remind him how exciting his life is - thanks to me!
I enjoy all sorts of exotic foods, although I’m allergic to jalapeno peppers so that limits my intake of spicy foods. And I draw the line at deep fried bugs. I don’t care how nutritious and full of protein they might be, I can’t do it!
JANETTE: What aspect of who you are drew you into writing romance?
ANNE: I believe in the power of love, and happily-ever-afters. I married my high school sweetheart. And I’m a real softy. How could I not write romance?!
JANETTE: How many novels have you written, and of those, how many have you sold?
ANNE: I’ve written five novels to date. DEFENDING GLORY (number five) and FRANK, INCENSE AND MURIEL (number four) are published. Books one and two will likely never see the light of day. It’s not that they’re completely awful, but it’s probably easier to just write a completely new book than struggle with all the required revisions. However, I may pull out book three one day and see if it can be salvaged. Maybe it’ll work as a novella.
JANETTE: As a full-time writer, how hard was it for you to get where you are today? Did it take long to reach that status? Were there a lot of rejections? Did they dishearten you? How long before that glorious call? What would be your advice to new writers?
ANNE: Twenty years after I placed fingertips to keyboard to write a story I got “the call”. So, yes. It was a long haul. Along the way I received at least thirty agent rejections and ten or more editor rejections. My advice to pre-pubbed writers is simple. Never, ever give up. Never!
JANETTE: Is there a story or character you’ve written that is closer to your heart than the others? Why is it? Who is your favorite character or story someone else has created/written about?
ANNE: I’m especially partial to Val. She’s a secondary character in FRANK, INCENSE AND MURIEL, first book of the Muriel Reeves Mysteries, and she is Muriel’s aunt. Val is off the wall, does and says outrageous things, but generally has a heart of gold and would never hurt a fly. I admire her spunk.
As to my favorite fictional character, it’s a toss up. Like most women I’m fascinated by Janet Evanovich’s Morelli and Ranger. Both are larger than life hunks. At the other end of the spectrum is Agatha Christie’s Poirot.
JANETTE: Do you have any real-life heroes?
ANNE: Not anyone specific, although I’m always intrigued by ordinary people who are faced with extraordinary circumstances and make not only the best of the situation but inspire us to be all that we can be. I find that aspect of humanity one of our more enduring qualities.
JANETTE: There are those of us writers who are known as “Pansters, Puzzlers, Plotters, and Patch-workers. (And there could be others out there, too.) LOL! What type of writer would you say you are?
ANNE: Definitely “pantser”. I rarely have any idea what is coming next. Even worse, I rarely remember what has already transpired! I have a two-second brain that somehow manages to weave together a wisp of an idea into a full fledged story…but it’s always a struggle.
JANETTE: Does your writing life allow you much time for a personal life?
ANNE: Fortunately, I’ve never had that problem. Family has always come first. Enjoying life’s experiences, and all it has to offer, comes second. Writing is a necessary component of my life, and I have no qualms of sitting at the computer for 8, 10 or even 12 hours at a stretch if need be. However, when there’s something else to see or do, I’m there! Life is too short to squander it on just one thing.
JANETTE: Tell me about what you’re currently writing.
ANNE: I’ve just begun “Defending Hope”. Set on a fictional northern Minnesota island where troubles outnumber residents, it is the second book of the Piedmont Island Trilogy. DEFENDING GLORY, the first in the series, is available now in either e-book format or print.
Next will be VAL AND TYNE DAY’S MURDER. It’s second in the Muriel Reeves Mysteries series, and one I’m especially looking forward to write because Val is center stage. It should be a lot of fun.
JANETTE: How long does the planning on a new story take you before you are ready to begin work on it?
ANNE: As I mentioned above, I’m a pantser, so I don’t really plan anything. I just get an idea, usually involving a dead body or another crime, and then I sit down and write. I need to find out who did what, and why, and it has to happen in a chronological order. I can’t skip from one scene to another unless that’s the order in which the action takes place.
JANETTE: What are your preferences in reading? Do you have any favorite authors that you admire?
ANNE: I read mainly romantic suspense and mystery. If the story has a touch of humor, that’s all the better. I love authors who string together a story so effortlessly that I zip through page after page without stopping to take a breath.
JANETTE: What other successes and accomplishments have you achieved during your lifetime?

ANNE: I'm very proud of my marriage to my high school sweetheart. He's my best friend, and I'd be lost without him. I'm also very proud of my relationship with my daughter. It's such a joy to stand back and watch her grow, mature, make decisions that are best for her, and allow her to be the best that she can be.

As for my books. I'm especially happy to see them in print because they're exactly what I've always wanted to write. Books that entertain, have equal parts mystery, suspense, and romance. With a dab of humor, and not a single swear word or sex scene to be found. Like Frank Sinatra, I'm proud because I did it my way!

IT'S SUSPENCEFUL SEVEN SENTENCE SUNDAY!

Welcome to my Suspenseful Seven Sentence Sunday post. The following excerpt is from my current work in progress, a story that deals with magic, both past and present, and the lovers who must conquer the surreal to reach their happy ever after.

Excerpt:
Valerie immediately sat down when she got home and took pen and paper out to begin writing about all she had seen during her regression that afternoon. What she had seen uncannily equated with her role in her current life. It seemed she had been a healer in a Roman court, just as she was a healer in the court system of today. It shivered her a bit that she had been a healer then, too.
Then she started connecting all the similarities between that life of hers, and this. Her name had been the same in pronunciation, only different in its spelling; her profession had been the same, working for the government in basically the same capacity. And she had loved the same man.

Four Short Weeks Remaining!

Four short weeks until OLY RWA’s Writer’s Retreat at Manresa Castle! Exciting times are expected (along with some SERIOUS writing, of course) I’m looking forward to it regardless of the monkey wrench thrown in by my boyfriend.
This means a change of plans, you may ask? What it means is that said boyfriend has been chosen as one of a lucky few civilians who gets to take off from and land on a US Naval Carrier in a Navy Jet! Of course, he will be instructed to obtain any literature he might come by to bring back to me and to retell his experience to me in specifics for my future writing research!
Exciting times for him! But that also means exciting times for me, too! I will get to check in to our room, right across the hall from the haunted rooms, All By Myself!
He plans on joining me later in the day of the retreat’s first day, at which time I’ll introduce him to any ghosts I’ve managed to meet up with! LOL! Fun, Fun, Fun!

I Don't Know What Happened!

My Christmas Star pictures are GONE!! I saw them after I took them, so I know that they once existed, but now I have looked everywhere for them, and They Are GONE! I have looked on my digital camera and they are not there. I have looked on my phone camera, and they are also not there!

There is only one possible explanation; there WERE ghosts in the underground of Seattle! I may not have seen him, but he followed me up and Took My Pictures from me!
And it was such a Beautiful Star. . .
